Chapter 14
âJake, is there something you want to tell us?â Esther asked as we gathered around the breakfast table.
Dessa stifled any possible attempts to hide our growing closeness. After we awoke, and settled down on the bottom floor of the inn, she took up a position by my side, attached to my arm. Sure, her cleavage always liked hugging my muscles, but this was different. She was more physical than usual. Dessa nuzzled against my shoulder like an affectionate pet.
âYeah,â I said, rubbing the back of my neck. âIâm not really sure how to say itâ¦â
âMy darling lover has decided to make me the first member of his harem,â Dessa proudly announced.
I winced and waited for a freak-out, from Titania especially.
âCongratulations,â Esther said.
âYouâre not mad?â I asked, amazed.
âOf course not. Youâre both adults. If you two want to be together, that has nothing to do with me. As long as you donât let it get in the way of our workâ¦â
I looked at the other. âWhat about you, Titania?â
âLike itâs any of my business,â she groaned, looking away. âI donât care what you two do. Just donât go showing it off. Itâs gross.â
âNow now, donât be such a virgin. Thereâs nothing wrong with a bit of public affection,â Dessa said, digging into the crook of my neck.
âYes, there is! And donât call me a virgin!â Titania snapped, jumping to her feet.
âTitania, sweetie. Please sit down,â Esther said, tugging her wrist.
The grumbling orc dropped back down, huffing and puffing below her breath.
Dessa giggled and glanced up at me. âThere you go, darling. I told you it was alright. Silly boy, getting worked up over nothing.â
âYeah, I guess so,â I laughed. It was a weight off my shoulders. I pulled Dessa closer by the waist.
âWell, ainât ya all lively?â an appearing Troya said.
We shared pleasantries as our breakfast arrived. Troya joined us but turned down an invitation to eat.
âGlad I caught ya all. I wanted to talk,â the oni woman said.
âItâs about whateverâs troubling this town, I presume,â Esther said.
Troya laughed. âRight ya are, missy. Yer a sharp one. Aye, things ainât too rosy at the moment. Weâre in a spot of bother.â
âWhat sort of bother?â I asked.
âThe usual kind. Demon bother.â
I tensed. âTell us about it.â
âSee, we ainât struggled too much with the demons,â Troya explained. âSure, thereâs a lot, but they ainât bothered our walls. That was until recent. In the last month, the demons have got more aggressive. Theyâve been attacking us more than ever. Worst of all, itâs not some uncoordinated mess. They attack together, escape together. I ainât never seen anything like it before.â
âDoesnât sound like any demon Iâve ever met,â Titania said, spluttering mouthfuls of food.
âAye,â Troya agreed. âSure, some be imps, but they ainât got the brains for tactics like this. Theyâve been launching bloody big boulders at the dome. How could a bunch of imps do that alone?â
âImps arenât stupid, but theyâre no tacticians,â Esther said. âPlus, theyâre cowards. This seems too big for them.
